Introducing our Citizen Sociolinguistics 2019 Class Blog

Welcome to our Citizen Sociolinguistics 2019 Class Blog!  We will be using this on-line space to blog and share our ongoing thoughts and concerns about how we talk about language, that is, citizen sociolinguistics.

Each week, two or three class participants will post their thoughts on the topic of the week.  I suspect some entries will focus on broad concepts like citizen sociolinguistic arrests, wonderment as a spark for language discussion, the methods and media of citizen sociolinguistics, context collapse, conversational and internet-based feedback loops, or everyday talk about language as acts of citizenship.

Some entries may instead (or in addition) focus on everyday language you have noticed--a word or communicative act that has sparked wonderment or drawn criticism.  Say, for example, you just heard someone say "drawlin'" and then started to wonder about that expression.  You can launch your own personal investigation by talking to people, surfing the Internet, calling your brother, running your own personal twitter survey, asking your facebook friends, etc.  Then post the findings of your inquiry here!

Conclude your post with a few questions you still have about your object of inquiry and our classmates (and possibly others who might view your writing in the publicly available blogosphere) will join the discussion, writing comments in our blog site, and add insight to your inevitably ongoing inquiry.
